Dear ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ Unified Family:

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day in which we honor a champion of the civil rights movement through service in our local communities. As I reflect upon the days ahead and what it means to truly be a community in service to each other, I am reminded of something Dr. King once wrote: “Love is the greatest force in the universe. It is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos.”

I see that great force of love in our schools and classrooms again and again–our deeply held respect for each and every member of our school community, the individual threads that together become our beautiful ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ Unified tapestry.

We welcome everyone in BUSD schools. We take pride in our diversity and our commitment to provide every student with schools and classrooms that are safe, welcoming, and humanizing. BUSD rejects all forms of hate, bullying, and discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, disability and sexual orientation.

Our Board of Education approved Board Resolution 5145.9 Hate-Motivated Behavior in 2023, outlining the definition and impact of hate-motivated behavior, providing prevention and intervention strategies, establishing a hate-motivated behavior complaint process, and identifying appropriate disciplinary actions.

The district has a reporting process, outlined on the Civil Rights and Compliance webpage, specifically around hate-motivated behavior. We continue to encourage our students to report any incidents immediately to our school site administrators or any trusted adults so that they can be promptly and thoroughly addressed.

I believe deeply in what Dr. King called our “inescapable network of mutuality” in his April 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail. We must continue to stand with all communities that make up our BUSD family. If you aren’t already familiar with these BUSD resources, resolutions, and policies, I encourage you to click on the links below to learn more.
